Antique trays with painted flowers are not only lovely and functional for serving food and drinks but they're perfect for wall decor, too. Charming, nostalgic and beautiful, they work in almost any room. Unfortunately, hand-painted antique trays can be expensive. We found them priced from $30 to $200 depending on their age and condition. But you can create a faux floral antique tray that looks just like the handpainted trays of the past for a lot less money. Here's how to do it :

Materials:

round metal pizza pan or rectangular metal cookie sheet without non-stick coating (or use metal trays found at yard sales or antique stores)
metal primer
spray paint - any color*
glossy black spray paint
scissors
magazine, book, greeting card and/or wrapping paper images to create designs*
decoupage paste
antique gold acrylic paint - optional
clear acrylic finishing spray

* You can use glossy black spray paint and flower designs to mimic the look of an antique floral tole tray. Tole painting is a form of folk art painting based upon a teachable method of specific strokes and techniques.

Steps:

  1. Prepare the pan with metal primer and allow to dry.
  2. Spray-paint the pan with desired color.
  3. Cut out selected images for the design (figure A).
  4. Use decoupage paste to coat the backs of the cutouts. Press each image onto the tray, smoothing out any bubbles. Apply all images and allow to dry.
  5. Once dry, cover the entire surface with one or two coats of decoupage paste to seal and finish (figure B).
  6. Embellish edges with an antique gold acrylic paint if desired. Seal the entire tray with a clear acrylic finishing spray.
