Figure B
Cindy Piccoli turns an wooden plaque and decorative doorknobs into the perfect coat rack for a small space.

Materials:

small cabinet doorknobs with hardware
drill
tape measure
pencil
scissors
pre-cut board (size of your choice)
paint, stain or paint wash
polyurethane
paint brush or rag
wallpaper
small bowl of water

Steps:

  1. After choosing the size of the board, treat it with stain, paint or use a color wash of paint. Let the board dry thoroughly.
  2. Measure to find the center points where the wallpaper cutouts will be placed.
  3. Once the wallpaper designs have been cut, soak them in water and apply them to the board. Blot the cutouts with a sponge or dry cloth and allow them to dry.
  4. Apply a coat of clear polyurethane finish over the entire board and let dry ( figure A).
  5. Measure and mark where the center of the doorknobs will be.
  6. Use a drill bit big enough for the door knob hardware, and drill holes for each mark (figure B).
  7. Insert doorknob hardware into the back of the board and screw the knobs in place.
  8. Use inexpensive picture hangers on the backside of the board to hang the coat rack on the wall.
