Video: Matt Fox imitates an existing Mission-style mirror in a smaller version.
Materials:

mirror
poplar pieces for frame
dark walnut stain
backsaw
miter box
jigsaw with scroll blade
4" wooden dowels
hammer
dovetail saw
sandpaper
router
varnish
wire brads
drill

Steps:

1. Remove the plastic edging from a ready-to-hang mirror. Measure it to get the dimensions for the wood frame (sides, top rail, bottom rail top shelf piece and shelf brackets). Cut all the main pieces using a backsaw and miter box.

2. For the curve on the bottom rail, draw the design, and then cut out the piece using a jigsaw with a scroll blade. Leave the line, and then sand it to smooth out the cut (figure A).

3. Use the same method as in Step 2 to cut two decorative shelf brackets.

4. Sand all the edges lightly before assembling for a worn look.

5. Use the technique called "through-dowel" joints to assemble the frame. Start by clamping the pieces together, and then drill 3-1/2 inch holes through the sides into the top and bottom pieces. Apply glue to the ends of the dowels and lightly hammer each into the holes (figure B). Cut the ends with a dovetail saw and sand smooth.

6. Use a router with a 3/8-inch piloted rabbeting bit to cut a recess for the mirror in the back of the frame.

7. Attach the top plate to the frame using finish nails and wood glue.

8. Apply stain and varnish according to manufacturer's directions. Once dry, place the mirror and a mirror back into the routed edge.

9. Use wire brads to secure the mirror.
