Host Renai Ellison demonstrates how to make a decorative folk-art weather vane with rusted tin roofing and a metal pole
(see photo at right).
Materials:
scrap wood
exterior paint
sandpaper
corrugated roofing or tin or metal scraps
tin snips (metal cutting tool)
drill
screws
washers (2 large and 2 small)
paint pens
dowel for base
wood glue
copper tubing (just slightly larger in diameter than dowel so fish can turn in the wind
Steps:
- Cut wood into the shape of a fish (oblong shape with one end flat), then sand and base coat with paint.
- Cut metal scraps into triangular shapes (figure A)--a total of six triangles in three different sizes (two of each size).
- Drill a hole in each triangle "fin." Apply metal pieces to wooden fish by drilling pilot holes in the wood and screwing in the pieces of metal (figure B). Remember, the three different sizes are for top fin, bottom fin and tail fin.
- Use two washers for each eye, one small washer on top of a larger washer. Screw the washers into the wood.
- Embellish fish with paint pens to add life and character.
- Mirror the design on the other side--applying fins, tail, eyes, and embellishment to match the reverse side.
Steps for the base:
- Drill a dowel-sized hole in the bottom of the fish. Insert a dowel into bottom of fish with wood glue on the tip of the dowel.
- Insert dowel into copper tubing, which you can then insert in the ground.
