Materials:
small wooden shelf units
bright paint (red, blue or yellow)
primer and sander (if needed)
bottle caps
little round mirrors
jewels
tiles
old tile and tile cutters (if needed)
wood glue
awl
hammer
small brass nails
safety glasses
metallic gold, silver or copper paint (optional)
Steps:
- Start with a shelf unit that is a very vivid color. If using one that has paint on it, either paint over the top of it or strip, sand, prime and then paint it. Add another coat if desired. Let dry.
- Decorate bottle caps by adding a dab of glue to the center of the underside and placing small mirrors, jewels or other eye-catching materials into glue. Let dry.
- Add glue to the back of caps and press down on the shelves along the outside edges. Apply a weight to the caps to make sure they set up.
- On different areas of the shelf, apply round, square and odd-shaped tile pieces using the glue and allow to set up like the bottle caps. If desired, cut old tile to create these pieces.
Other options
- Attach caps to the shelf logo-side up. After putting safety glasses on, use a sharp awl and hammer to poke one hole through the middle of each bottle cap. Attach to shelf with small brass nails.
- An alternative to the colorful logos is to spray-paint the outside of the bottle caps metallic colors, and then add them to shelf units.
