Materials:
FolkArt Artists' Pigments (Turner's Yellow, Yellow Light, Pure Black, Paynes Gray, Brilliant Ultramarine, Napthol Crimson)
brushes (#10 flat brush, 1" square wash brush, #2 Script liner)
FolkArt Blending Gel
FolkArt Glazing Medium
double lid box
chalk
stylus
water container
palette knife
FolkArt Artists' Varnish (Satin Sheen)
cotton rags
Steps:
- Sand box and remove dust with a tack cloth. Prime box and then base-coat it with Damask Blue using the one inch glaze varnish brush. Allow the first coat to dry and then apply a second coat. Paint the box trim Napthol Crimson with the #10 flat brush. Apply two or three coats to achieve an opaque coverage and allow adequate drying between coats. Allow the base-coated box to dry completely before proceeding to ensure that the paint has had adequate curing time.
- Trace all detail of design onto tracing paper using a permanent, fine point pen. Turn the design over and chalk the back of the design by drawing over the pattern lines with ordinary chalk (do not use dustless or colored chalk). Gently shake the pattern to remove the excess chalk. Turn the design right side up and secure it in place on the box. Trace the design onto the box with a stylus. When transferring the comma strokes, don't transfer the entire stroke; just draw a line through the center of it. This will indicate size and position while allowing more freedom when painting the design. When transferring the ballflower forms (roses) to the box, transfer only a circle for the same reason.
- Paint the hearts with Napthol Crimson using the #10 flat brush. Paint the roses with Titanium White and Napthol Crimson with the same brush. Be sure the coverage is opaque (figure A). Allow for adequate drying time if a second coat is needed.
- Over-stroke the ballflower forms with Napthol crimson and then the hearts with a mixture of equal parts Turner's Yellow and Yellow Light with the touch, press, lift and drag method (figure B). Paint the comma strokes that trim the top of the box with the #2 script liner fully loaded with the same pink mix used for the roses in Step 3.
- Create an antiquing glaze by combining equal parts of blending gel and glazing medium. Then add some Paynes Gray and a bit of pure black to it. Using the one-inch square wash brush, apply the antiquing glaze to the box working on only one section at a time (figure C).
- Use a cotton rag to wipe the glaze from the box, leaving it heavier in the crevices (figure D). Remove a bit more glaze in areas that would normally receive wear and show use. If it's difficult to remove, dampen the rag and continue to rub. Use the mop brush to soften the antiquing if desired. When painting in the Peter Hunt style, the softening of the antiquing is typically rather coarse.
- Apply two coats FolkArt Artists' varnish to the box and allow it to dry.
