Paper Rooster Picture
Materials:
Ultrahold Therm-O-Web Heat 'n Bond iron-on adhesive
Fiskars Paper Edgers scissors (wave, deckle, stamp, and bow tie patterns)
Fiskars Paper Punch (heart)
iron
handmade papers from Paper Source
1/2" foam core board (30" x 40")
1/4" hole punch
scissors
utility knife
black marker
Steps:
- For the background, cut foam core board into a 24'' x 24'' piece. Photocopy and enlarge rooster pattern to fit the board. Make two copies--one for cutting the pattern pieces and the other for reference when assembling.
- Cut the entire tail section from the pattern and set aside. Cut remaining pattern pieces. Note: Handmade papers feel almost like fabric and on average are sold in a 25'' x 37'' size. The brick red, dark green, brown and gold papers need to be at least 24" long to cover the height and width of the board for the background and borders.
- Following manufacturer's instructions, iron Heat 'n Bond onto backsides of paper sheets. Cover areas large enough to fit the pattern pieces. Plan to leave paper strips long enough to create border frame of picture. Do not remove the paper backing until ready to adhere in place.
- Iron the brown background paper onto the entire surface of the board. Transfer patterns to colored papers by laying each pattern, wrong side up, on top of the paper backing of the desired color. Trace each pattern piece with a marker. Trace the entire tail section onto the brick red paper.
- Use Paper Edgers scissors to cut colored pattern pieces. Cut tail feather pattern into smaller pieces for each individual section to be layered on top of the red background . The brick red will show through as a background color when holes are punched in the individual tail feathers.
- Use the heart and hole punch to make designs in the tail feathers (according to pattern) and set aside.
- Lay out pieces onto board as they are cut out. Once done, remove backing and iron each paper into place. Work from the bottom of the picture upward; iron the bottom layered papers first, then the next layers of paper and finally the punched feather details.
- Cut and add the borders. Firmly iron the papers around the edges of the board to avoid peeling later. Note: Cut green strips for border long enough to wrap around and cover sides.
Tips:
- Similar pieces of artwork can also be made with fabric remnants. Iron them on or, for a quilted effect, stitch them in place.
- Hide paper-cutting mistakes by gluing small pieces of torn papers to these areas. The edges will blend into the surface of the handmade paper.
- Pre-heat dry iron to silk setting before adhering papers.
- Don't overheat. This will cause a poor bond and can make the adhesive bleed through the paper.
