Floral expert Dale Rohman suggests using your seashell collection to create beautiful dried floral arrangements.

* Note: If you have collected shells from the beach, the first step is to soak them overnight in equal parts water and bleach to clean them. Make sure they are completely dry before using them for a craft project.

Shell Topiary

Materials:

white floral cone
soft green paint
waxed string
artemesia
hot glue

Steps:


  1. Paint a white floral cone a soft green.

  2. Tie waxed string around the circumference of the base, but don't cut it off from the spool.

  3. Wrap long stems of artemesia all the way up the cone, sticking the base of the stem in the in the cone and wrapping.

  • Start the next stem where the last one left off. Secure by wrapping the cone with waxed string (figure A).

  • Start with big shells first and distribute evenly around the cone, applying with hot glue (figure B). Hold the shell firmly until the glue starts to harden.

  • Fill in with smaller shells. Try gluing shell-to-shell.

  • Add flowers last, nestling them between the shells (figure C).

    Shell place card holders

    Use an arrangement of dried leaves, orange Chinese lanterns and a shell to make unusual place card holders (figure D).

    Soap Dish

    Hot glue dried flowers to the end of a shell to create a holder for candles, soaps or potpourri.

    Wreath

    Create a beautiful wreath for tabletops using the same technique as for the topiary on a wreath form (figure E). This wreath is too heavy to hang on the wall and should lay flat.
