Displaying Collectibles
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-723 -- More Projects »
Entertaining expert Dana Christine provides tips for creatively displaying collectibles.
- Curio cabinets (figure A) are best for displaying collectibles dust will not settle on them inside.
- Use other items to add interest to a collection. For instance, if you have a display of your grandmother's china, place a picture of her in a nice frame and include it among the dishes (figure B). Another idea is to use antique photos with a collection of older items.
- When arranging a cabinet or curio, play around with various ideas and looks before settling on one. Pay attention to certain details, such as whether the shelves move.
- Place notes inside your collectibles telling where and when you found them and the history of the item.
- Try using fabric to add height, depth and texture to a display. By laying down a doily and grouping certain items on it, you can create a very centered, grounded look.
- Picture-frame holders are great for displaying collectible plates.
- Invert a kitchen bowl, cover with fabric, and place a centerpiece on top. This will fill a large empty gap in an area such as the bottom shelf of a curio.
