Guest Jennifer Ferguson demonstrated this project.
Materials:
cabinet door
mirror cut to size of inset
mirror mastic
five drawer knobs
stencil brushes
artist wash brush
watercolor pencil
quilter's ruler
painter's tape
off-white AquaBond (primer)
AquaGard varnish
electric drill w/bits
wood sealer (if new wood)
Americana Acrylics: sand, camel, yellow ochre, black, honey brown, reindeer moss green, violet haze, evergreen, moon yellow, terra cotta, true ochre
stencils: zebra #TSG129, leopard #TSG128, animal print #TSG127, giraffe #TSG230, wild posies #TSG190
Steps:
1. If you're using a new cabinet door, apply one coat of wood sealer, allow to dry, and sand smooth. Then wipe with a damp cloth. For and old cabinet door: Remove old finish by sanding and then clean thoroughly with a damp cloth.
2. Apply two coats of AquaBond, allowing recommended dry time in between coats.
3. Using a quilter's ruler and watercolor pencil, mark off diagonal lines at all four corners (figure A).
4. Tape off all four corners with painter's tape. Place the tape on the outside corner area and burnish edges to prevent the paint from seeping under the tape.
5. Paint the four side areas first--one each honey brown, sand, yellow ochre and camel. Apply as many coats as necessary to achieve even opaque coverage.
6. When the paint is dry, remove the tape and re-tape the corner areas, applying the tape over the painted sections to allow painting of the previously hidden corners. Burnish the tape and paint all four corners with reindeer moss green, applying as many coats as needed to achieve even opaque coverage.
7. When the base coats are dry, remove all tape and repair any areas where paint bled through if necessary. When paint is dry, tape off the corners again so that the stenciling can be accomplished on the side areas (figure B).
8. Using the four different animal print stencils, stencil the four different colored side areas. Stencil the zebra in black, the giraffe in terra cotta, the leopard in black, and the animal print in true ochre and black (figure C).
9. When all stenciling is dry, remove the tape and re-tape the corner areas. Stencil all four corners with the wild posies stencil using violet haze and evergreen paint .
10. To finish the four corners, use an embossing tool to create "la de da" dots. Use moon yellow paint for the flower centers and black for random dots (figure D).
11. Allow all painting to dry for 48 hours and apply two coats of AquaGard varnish.
12. Measure and mark for placement of the holes for hardware. Drill five holes with an electric drill and install the hardware (figure E).
13. Install the mirror using mirror mastic according to directions on the package.
