Project designed by Lynne Farris.
Materials:
twisted paper yarn in red, yellow and green
spray bottle filled with water
plastic bag
toothpicks
Crafter's Pick Ultimate tacky or white glue
floral foam topiary ball
flower pot
Steps:
1. Unwind the twisted paper into four single pieces. Spray the pieces with water and store them in a plastic bag until the moisture spreads to permeate all of the pieces completely. The pieces should expand and loosen.
2. Unravel the strands of paper and let them dry (figure A). If they shrivel up after drying, simply pull the edges so that they open up again.
3. Glue small pieces of yellow paper onto the ends of toothpicks to make "stamens." Let dry.
4. Glue a stamen onto the end of a strip of red paper. Wrap about an inch of the paper around the toothpick and set aside to dry (figure B).
5. Wrap the remaining length of the paper strip around the stamen, twisting the paper it as you wrap. Leave about two inches of paper hanging at the end of the flower.
6. Place a small amount of glue onto the end of the paper and insert the end of the toothpick through the end of the paper (figure C). Twist the paper around the toothpick at the bottom edge of the flower.
7. To make leaves, twist a two-inch piece of green paper at the center (figure D). Insert the toothpick through the center of the paper near the twist and push it up toward the flower. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to make several flowers.
8. Wrap green strips of paper around the stem of the topiary base and glue in place.
9. Place the flowers into the head of the topiary base, covering all of the foam (figure E).
10. Glue pieces of unwound green paper onto the stem of the topiary to resemble vines (figure F).
11. Glue paper scraps onto the base of the topiary. Tie a bow around the flower pot with a strip of red paper.
