To create a live topiary, start with a 4" pot of ivy that has long, trailing tendrils. Train the plant around an inexpensive ($10 to $15) ready-made topiary frame. Bent coat hangers and interesting twigs work just as well for training ivy.
Stick the frame into the pot, and wrap the tendrils around it. If using a traditional ball-shaped form, trim the leaves off the tendrils surrounding the support pieces so that the foliage covers only the round parts. When the ivy is completely wrapped around the form, fill in the topiary with dried moss.
Trim the ivy frequently to encourage growth. Place the topiary in a well-lit area but not necessarily in direct light. Variegated ivy needs more light than dark-green ivy.
