While it's not going to taste as good when served with ice cream, a birthday "cake" floral display is a unique and beautiful way to celebrate a birthday.
Floral designer Ardith Beveridge shares tips for making decorative birthday gifts out of flowers.

Materials:

precut floral foam base or two square blocks of floral foam
kitchen knife
floral preservative
chrysanthemums, daisies, carnations, roses or any other flower of choice
scissors
pie plate
anti-transpirant

Steps:

Figure A

  1. Purchase a precut floral foam base, or cut one from two square blocks of foam. Just place the container for the "cake" on the blocks and cut out the desired shape with a kitchen knife (figure A).

  2. Saturate the foam in water, being sure to add floral preservative to the water.

  3. Use chrysanthemums, daisies, carnations, roses or any other flower you'd like. Garden flowers also work great.

  • Cut the flowers very short (figure B) to prolong their life and place them into the base.

  • Keep the display moist by placing it on a pie plate and watering thoroughly every three to four days. The cake should last for up to two weeks.

  • Spray the cake's flowers with an anti-transpirant to keep the moisture sealed in the petals.

    * Note: A smaller version of the cake is also nice (figure C). To create this version, place ribbon around the foam base and secure with straight pins (figure D). Use fresh or silk flowers for the cake, and attach decorative beads if desired.
