Clear ornaments wrapped around a candlestick reflect the glow of candlelight at night and create a magical atmosphere.
Stylist Maria McBride-Mellinger demonstrates how to create beautiful and inexpensive centerpieces without using flowers.

Candlestick With Ornaments

Materials:

clear glass ornaments (available online or at specialty stores during the holidays)
candlestick

Steps:

  1. Group three ornaments together by twisting the wires together. If they don’t have wires, add your own by applying some hot glue to the throat of the bulb and inserting a wire.

  2. After the wires have been twisted together, wrap the long tail of wire around a candlestick near its top.

  3. Fill in around the candlestick with groups of three ornaments.

Grommets, ribbon and sheet vinyl combine to create this unusual corset treatment for a glass hurricane.
Corseted Hurricane Lamp

Create a unique corset look for a plain glass hurricane lamp with these simple steps.

Materials:

hurricane lamp
vinyl (typically available at a plastic supply store or an industrial supply store, rather than a craft store)
grommet
grommet tool
scissors
colored ribbon

Steps:

  1. Cut the plastic to a size that will fit around the outside of the glass hurricane.

  2. Install grommets about an inch apart on each edge of the plastic. How many you use will depend on the size of your hurricane.

  3. Thread the grommets with colored ribbon to hold the vinyl together.

Variations

  • Another treatment for hurricane lamps is to wrap them with vellum paper (a semi-transparent paper, often covered with patterns, which is available at craft stores) that is glued into place.

  • To add a natural touch, add some green foliage, a rubber band and satin ribbon. Place a wide rubber band around the base of the hurricane. Insert the stems of the greenery into the rubber band (see photo at below, right). Arrange the stems so the top of the foliage is level and then trim the stems for a neat finish at the base. Wrap the base with wide satin ribbon (about 1-1/2 inch) to conceal the rubber band and hold in place with a gold notary seal or other decorative seal.

Artificial grapevine and fresh fruit make a bountiful table display for a wine-and-cheese party.
Grape Candelabra

Wrap a candelabra with artificial grape vine, making sure to liberally cover each arm. Place it on a tray and pile on colorful varieties of grapes. For added color, add a bit of greenery at the base of each candle.
