Boxwood Topiary

If you don't have boxwood in your own yard, check with local floral shops who may either have it on hand or be able to order it for you.
Materials:

small urn
boxwood branches
floral foam
scissors
craft knife

Steps:

  1. Soak foam in water according to package directions.
  2. Measure the length of the urn and cut foam to size.

  • Press the foam on the opening of the urn (figure A) and carve off the sides until it fits one-third of the way inside (figure B). The foam should stand about five inches above the rim.
  • Carve the top into a dome shape.

  • Cut the branches at their natural joints, then starting from the bottom, press the stems in all four sides (figure C) and one on top.
  • Continue turning and adding layers, using smaller branches near the top, until a free-form tree- or cone-shape is created. When finished, the arrangement should be taller than the vessel itself.
