Edible Floral Vases

Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-317 -- More Projects »
Create the perfect centerpiece with advice from author and floral expert Rita Maggert who turns a watermelon into a colorful floral vase.

Materials:

1/2 watermelon, sliced lengthwise
block of floral foam (large enough to take up 1/3 space inside the melon)
potted shrimp plant
potted ivy plant
waterproof paper
variety of fresh flowers
large plant leaves
moss

Steps:

  1. Scoop out the insides of the watermelon. For an extra decorative touch, scallop the edges by cutting out small triangular sections around the top of the melon.
  2. Center the floral foam block inside the watermelon half. There should be space left on either side of the foam.
  3. Remove the plants from their pots and wrap the root systems and dirt in waterproof paper. Place the plants snuggly into the melon on either side of the floral foam.
  4. Cut fresh flower at various lengths, making certain to snip the stems at an angle. Arrange the flowers in the foam. Tip: Tropical flowers tend to last longer in hot weather.
