This centerpiece is designed for a table where a meal is planned--it's petite so that guests can make eye contact during conversation.
Dale Rohman, "America's Flower Man," shows how to create beautiful centerpieces for dinner parties at a fraction of the price it would cost to buy them.

Hydrangea Arrangement

Materials:

fresh hydrangeas
floral foam
simulated silver bowl (available at flower and craft shops)
fresh roses
fresh delphinium

Steps:

  1. Submerge the hydrangeas in a bowl of cold water--head down--for an hour. This will firm up the petals.

  2. Once the hydrangeas have drip-dried, give them a 45 degree-angle cut and place them in a deep bucket of warm water overnight. Once this is done, the hydrangeas will be "conditioned" and ready-to-go.

  3. Soak a block of floral foam until completely saturated, then place in the faux silver bowl.

Figure A
  • Cut the stems of the hydrangeas short, again at a 45-degree angles, then poke into the foam at 45-degree angles so that the petals hang over the bowl (figure A). The shorter the stem, the longer the flowers will last.

    Figure B
  • Once the perimeter is full, add fresh roses. Again, go with short stems and mist the roses with warm water, which will give the rose a fuller, showy look (figure B). Work in a circle, building to the center. Fill in the gaps with beautiful blue delphinium.

    Sunflower Arrangement

    Materials:

    newspapers
    8 sunflowers
    pipe cleaners
    floral foam
    clay pot

    Steps:

    1. Line the pot with newspaper so that the floral foam fits snug.

  • Group the sunflowers together and secure near the top with a pipe cleaner. Hide the pipe cleaner with ribbon or straw-like material (figure C).

  • Cut the base of the stems at angles from two sides, creating a point, then push into wet floral foam.

  • Keep the floral foam in a plastic container so that the newspaper isn't soaked. Hide the foam and newspaper with moss.
