Long-lasting carnations and feathers are used to create this exotic "pineapple" arrangement.

Carnation PineappleMaterials:
carnations
floral foam
small bowl
pencil
scissors
wooden meat skewers
feathers
shallow dish
fruit (optional)
Steps:
- Start by pressing two blocks of floral foam together, standing tall on the short end.
Use a small bowl to trace the circumference and whittle down the two blocks into a pineapple shape (figure A). Soak the foam before cutting to make it easier. Hold the foam together with wooden meat skewers, inserted at an angle and crisscrossed.Cut the carnation stem up to the calyx (base of the flower)--they will last longer with a shorter stem. Pinch the calyx to open up the petals and spread the flower. Starting at the bottom, insert the flowers around the foam.Fill the foam up halfway and then insert the feathers at the top of the foam. This will give you a good idea of how to arrange the last layer of flowers.Display the pineapple on a shallow dish with some water in the bottom, perhaps surrounded by fruit.

Arrange flowers in a floral box using clear cellophane for a beautiful presentation. Add water tubes so the flowers will be fresh when opened.

Other Ideas
- A beautiful arrangement to send to a newly engaged couple is an arrangement of orchids, which are a symbol of love, wisdom and hope. Nestle the orchids down into a clear bubble bowl, with sprays of the flowers drifting up and out of the bowl.

Two takes on a papier-mâché container: one is covered with glued-on galax leaves, and the other is wrapped with Spanish moss. Make handles from fresh pussy willow.

|
Papier-mâché containers are wonderful for creating unique arrangements, as they can be wrapped with a variety of materials. Try using Spanish moss for a rustic look, for example. Wrap the container with moss and secure it by wrapping the circumference with green waxed string.
Start the string on the inside of the container and tape it down (figure B), then wrap the string around several times until you come back to the taped string. Undo the tape and tie off the ends. Moisten the moss and wring it out before arranging--it will be much easier to work with.Decorate the top of a birthday cake with carnations and ice cream cones. Bite off the bottom of a sugar cone, and glue a wooden meat skewer to the bottom, leaving about one to two inches of the stem sticking down. Fill the top of the cone with a bunch of small carnations tied together and glued to the rim for added security. Stick the cones into the top of the cake.
Give a box of flowers. Just cover an appropriately-sized box (tall enough to hold flower stems) with fun wrapping paper. Line with colored tissue paper that rises above the edge of the box. Insert wet floral foam inside the box. Add flowers (figure C). Add balloons for a gala effect. Dress the balloons with a rosette--tie a small ribbon around the stem of a small flower and glue the rosette to the base of the balloon. Insert the balloon sticks into the foam.
Try wrapping a gift of flowers for a gentleman with a floral print tie (figure D).
