  • Silk flowers are not actually made from silk but from fabric and are sometimes referred to as permanent botanicals.

  • Some silk flowers have realistic stems that are handwrapped or textured rather than plain plastic (figure A).

  • Pliable stems made with wire are even more realistic looking because they can bend to the form you like.

  • Silk foliage adds a lot to a silk floral arrangement (figure B).

  • Secure silk flower heads with hot glue.

  • Sear edges of leaves with a match if they become frayed (figure C).

  • To keep silk flowers clean, pour some salt into a bag, hold the flowers upside down in the bag and shake vigorously (figure D).

  • Commercial water-based silk flower cleaners also work well, as does a feather duster (figure E).

  • A clothes steamer or steam iron works great for adding new life to silk flowers.

  • Set your hair dryer to "no-heat" to dust off silk flowers.
