\Michele Thompson, manager and decorator of Southern Lights, explains a number of ways to make your home come alive for spring.
- First rid the home of all the clutter that tends to build up in the winter. Clear away magazines and books that have been piled on tables.
- If a table looks too bare, try adding just one simple item, such as a light-colored candle or a small bouquet of flowers (figure A). Remember, the idea is to keep everything open and clean. Nothing says spring quite like a colorful display of flowers. Place them throughout the house to add color, fragrance and texture to each room.
- Another great idea that will help bring a spring atmosphere into the home is putting out fresh fruit such as lemons, limes and oranges in an attractive white bowl (figure B). Not only are they attractive, but they also give off a nice scent.
- Put away any afghans or other blankets that are draped over the backs of sofas and chairs. Clean them first, then store them until needed again.
- Either remove the rug or replace it with a lighter-colored one. Once again, the idea is to make the room seem more open and breezy.
- Switch over to dishware that's lighter in weight and more colorful. It will not only help make the heavier stuff last longer, but it's also nice to have a new fresh look for the new season.
- Change out the art in the home to reflect the arrival of spring. Take down any art that is dark in color or has a winter theme to it, then put up some lighter pictures of birds, flowers or other spring themes.
