Materials:

glue or anchor tape
floral greens
scissors
seasonal foliage

Steps:

  1. Mix a preservative in warm water and float a block of floral foam in it until it turns dark.

  • Place the foam in a container or liner. The foam should rise about 1 to 1-1/2 inch above the lip of the container. Secure the foam in place with glue or anchor tape (figure A).

  • Mix more of the preservative in the water, then fill the container with warm water. Use greens purchased at a floral store and arrange them around the side to hide the floral foam (figure B).

  • Remove the binder from the stem base. Remove the flowers from the plastic and remove the binder from the stem base. Lay the flowers out and arrange them as they'll go into the arrangement.

  • Find and mark the center point of the foam. Arrange the flowers so that all the materials seem to radiate out of this central vertical axis.

  • Before putting flowers in the arrangement, cut the stems off while holding them underwater. This prevents air from clogging the stems and helps the flowers last longer.

  • Cut the stems of the foliage so that about an inch of the stem is placed in the foam around the lip of the container. Add the rest into the center of the design. All stems should be placed into the center at an angle in an irregular fashion.

  • Place the first flowers around the base at each of the four compass points around the foam and one in the center. Gently insert materials in the foam, being careful not to break the stems.

  • Fill in around the base with seasonal foliage. For example, use leaves in the autumn, cones in the winter, grass or straw in the spring and grasses or vines in the summer. Baby's breath is another nice filler that's inexpensive and easy to work with.

  • Water the arrangement daily and enjoy.
