Arrangement 3
Dale Rohman, "America's Flower Man," shows how to create centerpiece arrangements that fit the table.

Arrangement 1

The first large arrangement is perfect for a glass table with light from overhead, because it lets the light filter down through the glass vase and plays off the curves of the corkscrew willow inside the vase. To create it, follow the steps below.

Materials:

corkscrew willow
long stems of rye
stargazer lilies
peacock feathers

Steps:

  1. Start with corkscrew willow, which serves as a grid to hold the other flowers.

  2. Add long stems of rye, several stargazer lilies and a few peacock feathers.

* Note: Cut the stamen out of the center of the lilies so that they won't drop pollen all over the table.

Arrangement 2

The small whimsical arrangement is great for a colorful kitchen.

Materials:

teapot
floral foam
group of lilies
group of hydrangeas
moss
boxwood sprigs
meat skewers
lemons

Steps:

  1. Fill a teapot with a layer of wet floral foam.

  2. Tie a group of lilies and hydrangeas together to make a "trunk," and stick the trunk into foam.

  3. Cover foam with moss, and add a few boxwood sprigs.

  4. Put meat skewers into a couple of lemons and stick those into the moss.

Arrangement 3

A dramatic combination of greenery and decorative reeds makes the third arrangement a perfect match for a contemporary decor.

Materials:

floral foam
vase
floral wire
split-leaf philodendron
lilies
reeds

Steps:

  1. Start with wet floral foam in the vase.

  2. Use floral wire to hold together a few leaves of split-leaf philodendron, and stick it into the foam as one stem so that the leaves rest just at the top of the vase.

  3. Wire two stems of lilies together and stick those into the center of the foam.

  4. Wrap reeds around the stem of the flowers.

* Note: All flowers and greenery should be available at most floral shops as well as florist-supply stores.

Tips

  • Always trim stems of greenery on a slant before adding to vase. Cutting opens up the stem so the plant can pull water efficiently. Cutting it on a slant gives the plant more surface area with which to draw water.

  • It's easier to work with moss when it's wet.

  • To prolong the life of flowers, add a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon bleach and 1/2 teaspoon sugar to every 1-1/2 cup of water in the vase.
