Dale Rohman, "America's Flower Man," shows how to dress up a table with centerpieces that encompass the Greek symbol of hospitality--the pineapple--and entertaining with what he refers to as the pineapple look-alikes.
He includes details about working with various pineapple-shaped flowers (pineapple protea), gourds and even some miniature and different types of pineapples, where to find them and how to present them.
Materials:
two large blocks floral foam
toothpicks
floral tape
knife
flax leaves
aspidistra leaves
orchids
carnations (color of your choice)
fresh fruits
Steps:
- Attach two large pieces of floral foam with toothpicks and floral tape (figure A). Try and resemble the shape of a large pineapple, which means some carving may be necessary.
- Wet the floral foam.
- Pinch and staple the end of a flax leaf (typically available at flower shops) and insert in the top of the floral foam. Four leaves were used for this project.
- Spray a few aspidistra leaves, which can be found at flower shops, with plant shine and cut the stems at an angle and insert in the floral foam beside the flax leaves.
- Insert a few orchid bunches. Flowers called dancing ladies were used for this project.
- Cut the stems of the carnations and insert at an angle. If the carnation bud is tight, simply pinch the green casing around the flower (the callus) and fluff the petals open. It takes approximately 25 carnations to cover the floral foam entirely. It depends on the size of the foam and the flowers.
- Continue to cover the foam with the carnations.
- Place fresh fruit at the bottom of the centerpiece.
Note: A fun variation is to use straw flowers and pheasant feathers for the topping (see the photo).
