Choosing Tile
Fix It Up! : Episode FIX-101 -- More Projects »
A tiled backsplash not only provides a decorative accent to the kitchen wall, but it's functional, too. A smooth tile surface allows you clean up kitchen messes and cooking splatters with ease. Hosts Amanda Rosseter and Pat Simpson explore the variety of tile options and demonstrate how to install a basic backsplash from start to finish in as little as one weekend.
Choosing TileProject director Amanda Light explains the different tile selections available. The most common and basic tile is the builder model, a plain 4" x 4" ceramic tile (figure A).
Another ceramic option includes tile with an antique finish (figure B). For a natural look, use tiles such as stone, slate or this limestone (figure C). Because of its porous surface, limestone requires a sealant both before grouting and again every few years.
Handmade mold tiles are more expensive, but they are each unique and provide one-of-a-kind character to the finished product (figure D). You can also purchase mosaic tiles that are composed of many different tiles placed in a specific pattern (figure E). Add dimension to your tile work with decorative liners (figure F).
To keep expenses down without sacrificing the finished quality, mix glazed tiles with decorative liners (figure G). When working with tiles, consider combining more than one texture in an area. Incorporate glazed tiles with natural limestone tiles for an interesting effect. Also, pay attention to the size of the area to be tiled. Large tiles used in a small room give the illusion of a bigger space (figure H).
