Maintenance of Area Rugs
Room by Room : Episode RXR-1111 -- More Projects » Keep rugs clean and maintain them with some tips from Dede Moore, Dee Chiavetta and Thom Muir:
- 60 percent of area rugs sold today go on top of wall-to-wall carpeting. Be sure to use padding specially designed for carpet-to-carpet contact that keeps the area rug from moving and prevents color transference, too.
- The two enemies of wool rugs are moths and water (the first is not a problem if the rug is in use). Don't place potted plants on rugs as watering them repeatedly may cause a hole.
- Vacuum rugs regularly and be careful not to sweep up the fringe. Do this in the direction of the pile. Determine this by brushing your hand across the rug--one direction will feel smooth and the other rough. Vacuum in the smooth or rough direction, being sure not to go across the nap.
- Rugs can be sprayed to help with cleaning. Even if they don't look dirty, they are, so a professional cleaning outside the home is recommended every five to seven years.
- Rotating a rug 180 degrees every year or two helps to even out the effects of sunlight and traffic, thus extending its life.
- When spills occur, the tighter weave and quality of the wool of a hand-knotted rug works like the down on a duck--they sit on top of the fibers. This allows enough time to absorb the spill with a towel. Follow by blotting the area with water or club soda to make sure everything is gone. Then lift the rug up in that area to allow air circulation to dry it naturally.
