A flat brush is used to apply paint to a sisal rug.
Designer Cynthia Bennett designed a circular five-room area that has no walls, only visual boundaries. One way she unified the distinct dining and relaxation areas was with a couple of sisal rugs, stenciled with details similar to the chintz drapes . Here's the sisal stenciling procedure Bennett recommends:

  1. Use medium-weight sisal and acrylic paint.
  2. Create an acetate stencil pattern that repeats a coordinating part of the drapes or a pillow or buy a pre-cut stencil that will work with your room design.
  3. Tape the stencil onto the sisal with duct tape, which will also block off a border.
  4. Use a flat brush to apply paint over the stencil and the marked-off borders, using a light back and forth motion.
