At the Spring Southern Show in Charlotte, North Carolina, host Kitty Bartholomew introduces textile designer Liora Manne who demonstrates her innovative technique for making mosaic rugs. Called lamontage, the process requires a specially-made material that is a blend of acrylic, wool and rayon. The wispy fibers, which are blended to get any shade or gradation required for a project, are first layered atop a work surface made of Styrofoam. Then a special barbed needle is jabbed through the separate layers, blending the different colors into the desired effect. The artisan then cuts out each individual square and uses the jabbing technique to apply the squares to the background. The result is a beautifully detailed rug that looks like a real stone mosaic.
