Use fabric squares to create the soft look and feel of chenille.
Materials:

1-1/2 yard rayon fabric for base
six 1-1/2 yard cuts of six different rayon fabric for upper layers
1/2" Omni strip
rotary cutter
straightedge
ruler

Steps:

  1. Cut out 20 10-1/4-inch bias squares from base fabric.
  2. Cut 20 nine-inch squares from each of the remaining fabrics.
  3. Layer one of each nine-inch square on each of the 10-1/4-inch squares, and then pin in place through all layers.
  4. On the top fabric square in each stack, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite one. Draw additional lines 3/4 inch apart one either side of the center line.
  5. Straight-stitch along the diagonal lines through all layers. Remove pins.Slip the Omni strip between two rows of stitching and between the bottom layer of fabric and the base fabric. Use a rotary cutter to slit the fabric between the stitching lines. Repeat between each stitch line.
  6. Line the squares up with right sides together and stitch right along the edge until the rug is assembled. Finish the outer border with a 1/2-inch double fold hem or enclose the raw edge in bias tape.
  7. Launder the rug and dry on low--the more the rug is laundered the fluffier the rug will get.
