Flokati Rugs
Smart Design : Episode SDN-105 -- More Projects »
Retro style is all the rage so it's no surprise that more and more people are decorating their homes with a look to the past. - One of the hottest trends in the '60s and '70s was flokati rugs. Their plush texture and luxurious feel made them the perfect throw for in front of the fireplace or under a beanbag chair and the same holds true today.
This 100-percent wool nostalgic rug, which is hand-woven in Greece, has been given an enormous dose of color and the kaleidoscope of new options can instantly change the look of your furnishings. The color palette has become so wide-ranging that you can even find these plush rugs in soft pastel colors (figure A). It may look delicate, but this rug is durable and machine washable (in a large commercial washer). Flokati is probably the most affordable rug there is because it lasts forever.
With its growing popularity, flokati is not exclusive to rugs. Use pillows as an accessory or liven up a bed with a throw (figure B). Look for fabrics that mimic flokati to make your own pillows and throws. How does flokati get its unique texture? After the wool is hand woven, it looks like a mass of string and is then rinsed for 40 hours. The backing swells, while the pile unravels and fluffs out.
