Renai Ellison loved how classroom blackboards were recycled into slate flooring. Inspired by that look, she demonstrates how to create a faux blackboard tile floorcloth, using blackboard paint and canvas that would be great in any room in the home--especially a family or child's room. The finished floorcloth has the look of slate blackboard tiles and is very simple to make.

Materials:

No. 10 canvas
hot glue
primer
black paint
straight edge
sponge paintbrush
artists' brush
yellow paint
red paint
white paint

Steps:

  1. Trim canvas to the right size for the area you want to place it in, then cut out each corner. This creates a clean finish when you fold down the edges. Hemming isn't necessary, just use a hot glue gun.

  2. Once the edges are folded and dry, prime the canvas then paint it black.

Figure A
  • The next step is to use the straight edge and chalk to create a grid on the fabric (figure A). Keep in mind the border area where there will be a "school ruler" look.

  • Once the grid is finished, paint the border using the yellow paint balanced with some red.

  • Using the artists' brush, paint over the grid lines with a slate gray color (mixing black and white paint). Once the lines are drawn, you are ready to paint in the squares.

    Figure B
  • The colors of the squares can vary according to taste--have fun with it. Mix the black and white on the square to change the shade darker or lighter (figure B).

  • Once the border and tiles are completed, use a permanent marker to draw ruler marks.
