Materials:
painter's canvas (available in hardware and home improvement stores)
yardstick
pencil
glue
8 small blocks of wood
clamps
gesso
brushes
paint (oils or acrylics*)
stencils
stencil brushes
glaze
cloth
* If oil paints are used, mix them with small amounts of varnish and dryer.
Steps:
- Decide how big the floorcloth will be, and cut the canvas 1" longer and wider.
- With a pencil, draw a line 2" in from the edges of the canvas.
- Cut each corner off diagonally, fold the edges down to the 2" lines, and glue them in place.
- Place each corner between two small blocks of wood and fasten them in place with clamps until the glue is dry.
- Mix the base color if necessary. Brush it over the canvas, and let it dry.
- Make stencils or use pre-cut ones.
- Stencil each design, working with an almost-dry brush and dabbing paint into each area. Let the paint dry.
- Brush a thin glaze over the entire cloth, and immediately wipe it off with a cloth.
