Materials:
cardboard cutting board (available in fabric stores)
decorator fabric for front and back
fusible fleece-type batting
fusible paper-backed adhesive
tacky fabric glue
cording with lip
scissors or utility knife
Note: This fireplace screen is only to be used for decorative purposes. Do not use when fireplace is in use.
Steps:
- Cut the cardboard cutting board to fit the fireplace opening. Create a decorative top edge on the screen panels as desired.
- Use the frame to determine yardage for fabric, batting and trim. Cut fabric 2-1/2 inches larger than the screen around all sides for the front piece. Cut lining and batting to shape.
- Fuse fleece batting to cardboard front and trim to shape. Use it as a template to cut fusible adhesive to size. Center and adhere fusible adhesive to wrong side of decorator fabric. Remove paper and fuse to batting layer.
- Turn board over and bring the edges of the fabric to the back of the board. Clip notches in the fabric around curves so it will fold smoothly over the edges and glue it in place.
- Fuse adhesive to wrong side of lining as above. After it is fused, cut lining so that it is slightly smaller than the finished screen. Remove paper backing and fuse to back of screen.
- Glue cording around all outside edges for a neat finish.
