Materials:
24 wood pickets (or number to cover opening of fireplace)
1" x 4" wood pieces
hammer
straightedge
finishing nails
pencil
tape measure
tack cloth
whitewash or pickling stain (or choice of paint to match decor)
hinges
drill
screwdriver
Steps:
- Measure the height of fireplace opening and cut pickets to appropriate height.
- Measure the width of the opening. The picket width will determine the number needed to cover the opening. Leave two-inch spaces between each picket.
- Cut 1x 4s the appropriate length to cover the width of the pickets and use two (on the center and side sections of the pickets) to secure the pickets together.
- Lay 1x 4s across the work surface, and place pickets on top of them. Use a spare piece of wood to represent the floor to ensure all pieces are flush.
- Secure pickets with finishing nails to the 1 x 4s. Remember to leave two-inch spaces between each. Repeat same process for sides of fence.
- Connect the sides of the fence using hinges. Drill pilot holes where desired and then attach with a screwdriver.
- For a whitewashed look: Use white acrylic paint diluted with water and apply to surface. Wipe off excess with paper towel. Let dry thoroughly.
- For pickling technique: Apply pickling stain and let dry thoroughly.
