Figure C
Renai Ellison demonstrates how to paint a wooden fireplace screen with a seashore motif (see photo at right).

Materials:

ruler
plywood or boards to cut for the screen
handsaw or table saw
sandpaper
latex and acrylic paints in seashore colors
paintbrushes
hinges with screws and drill with screw bit
pencil

Steps:

  1. Measure the fireplace opening. Cut three boards to fit in the front. These will be hinged to create a screen (figure A). The middle board should be wider, while the two sideboards should be narrower.

  2. Lightly sand the boards.

  3. Paint the front and back of the boards with latex paint in the color of your choice (figure B). Let dry well.

  4. Hinge the boards together so that the two side panels turn backward from the middle board.

  5. Lay the hinged screen on a flat surface and use a pencil to draw seashore images--fish, shells, boats, etc., or use a stencil and paint on the images (figure C).

  6. Fill in the drawn images with acrylic paints, keeping the painting style loose. Don't forget to paint the back and the edges of the screen.
