Figure D
Craft expert Katheryn Bieber shows how to paint a romantic fireplace screen (see photo at right).

Materials:

sea sponges
latex paint or primer
wooden fireplace screen
glazing medium
acrylic paints
artists brushes
metallic copper paint

Steps:

  1. Use a damp sea sponge to paint the screen with a base coat (figure A).

  2. Apply glazing medium with a separate sea sponge by dipping it into the glazing medium and dabbing colors onto the screen randomly.

  3. Once the screen is covered, blend the colors by dabbing with a sponge (figure B). For a more muted background, dab on more of the base coat with the acrylic colors. Let dry.

  4. To paint roses, double-load an artists brush with rose color and white, then swirl the paint onto the screen (figure C). For leaves, double-load green and white.

  5. Go over the roses with metallic copper paint to give them a more muted look (figure D).
