If you look in any decorating magazine, it's very likely you'll see at least one picture with a fireplace in it. Fireplaces have been the focal point of a room since the Middle Ages, so it only makes good decorating sense to dress up your fireplace in the off-season. Do just that with a seasonal fireplace screen slipcover.

Materials:

fabric of your choice in two different colors*
rotary cutter
cutting mat
transparent ruler
disappearing marker

*A floral print and a striped print were used in this project.

Steps:

  1. This project is made specifically for a flat-topped fireplace screen. If your screen is a different shape, you can easily make your own by purchasing three same-size panels at the home center, attaching them with hinges, and adding curtain finials on the bottoms as legs.
  2. Measure the length of the panel, double it, and add one inch for a seam allowance. Do the same for the other side, and cut the lengths of fabric.
  3. Fold in the fabric half to decide where to place ribbon, and mark the designated spot with a disappearing marker. Pin the ribbon in place.
  4. Fold the flowered panels, and sew them together to create a front and back. Sew to the middle, slip in the ribbon, and continue to sew.
  5. Fold the striped panels and sew them together, also creating a front and back. Again, sew to the middle, slip in the ribbon, and continue to sew.
  6. Place the flower and striped panels against each other, and sew three sides, except for the bottom, wrong sides together.
  7. Turn the panels right side out, and lay them out again.
  8. Connect all three panels by sewing a strip of fabric at the top.
  9. Turn the panels over, and do the same to the other side, tucking in the fabric to make sure the edge is finished well.
  10. Enhance the look by adding a bow made of wire-edged ribbon on both ends.
