Preparing the Screen:
  1. Trim down three sections of a picket fence to fit the height of the fireplace. Make sure that combined width of the panels, once they're hinged together, will completely cover the width of the fireplace.
  2. Make sure the horizontal boards holding the fence together are secure, but don't let any nails show through to the front of the fence.
  3. Spray or brush the panel with a light color paint as primer, and let it dry.

Stamping and Painting:

  1. Design Press stamps used in this segment have been discontinued. Create custom stamps from foam sheets available from most arts and crafts stores. Be sure to leave a handle for applying and removing stamp.
  2. Roll up the hydrangea foam press (see Resources below), fasten it with a rubber band, and dip sections of the squared off end of it into several complementary colors of paint. Dab off any excess, and press on the fence in several overlapping areas.
  3. Dip the pointed end of the press into the same colors, and press it around the edges of the flower to create a light, airy look.
  4. With any inexpensive brush, apply a little paint to the leaf shape and press two or three leaves before reloading the press with paint.
  5. To make a pansy, paint one petal one color and the other colors for a natural look, and press.
  6. Use brush markers to draw in tendrils, but avoid an excessive number of strokes. Flower petals and dotted lines (representing a bee's path, for example) may also be created with the brush markers.
  7. Hinge three panels together.

Tip: To prevent the presses from drying out, either wash them between uses or place them face-down on a wet paper towel until finished. Be sure to wash them thoroughly when the project is complete.
