Pat Clemens, former editor of "Woman's Day Weekend Decorating," creates a beautiful fireplace screen out of fabric, batting and twigs. (Note: This frame is designed for decorative purposes only. Do not use it in front of a lighted fire.)

Materials:

1 yard decorative fabric
17" by 20" piece of Fairfield Processing Poly-fil Ultra-Loft Batting
Duncan Precious Metals paint in Solid Gold
3/4" square wood stock for frame: four 28 1/2" pieces, two 26" pieces, two 16" pieces and four 4" pieces
16" by 19" piece of 1/4" luan
two 1" by 2" wood cut into two 12" pieces for feet
5 1/2" lengths of twigs and thin branches
staple gun and staples
ruler or yardstick
wood glue
finishing nails
decorative upholstery tacks in brass finish
hammer
brush
pencil
scissors

Steps:

  1. Use the finishing nails to join the two 26-inch pieces of wood stock and two of the 28-1/2" strips for the frame. This should give the frame outside dimensions of 26" x 30".
  2. Glue the other two 28-1/2" strips four inches inside the outer 28-1/2" strips.
  3. Glue a 16-inch strip and two four-inch strips four inches inside the frame, parallel to each outer 26-inch strip. Let the glue dry overnight.
  4. Stand one of the foot pieces so that it is 12 inches wide and two inches tall as it rests on the work surface. Cut a notch 3/4" wide and 3/4" deep notch in the center the top side of each piece.
  5. Shape the foot pieces. Trim away the top edge of each piece in a slight curve. Start at the top of the notch and cut down the length of the piece to 1/2" from the bottom of each two-inch side.
  6. Apply a coat of Solid Gold paint to the wood frame and the wood feet. Let the paint dry completely.
  7. Use the finishing nails to attach the twigs around the perimeter of the front of the painted frame. Paint the twigs with Solid Gold paint and allow them to dry thoroughly.
  8. Place the fabric right-side down on a flat surface. Place the batting on top of the fabric, then center the luan on the batting. Pull it taut and staple the fabric edges to the back of the center panel. Staple the center of the four edges first, and then work out to the corners. Trim off any excess fabric and batting.
  9. Apply decorative tacks to the front of the padded panel.
  10. Press under 1/2" along each edge of the 17" x 20" piece of backing fabric. Staple it in place on the back of the center panel. Push the panel from the back into the center opening of the frame. It should be a snug fit.
