Lean a large framed photograph, painted canvas or picture to the right or left of the side of the mantel instead of centering it on the wall. This creates a casual, yet elegant asymmetrical arrangement.

Use a mirror as a backdrop for artwork or objets d'art. The mirror adds visual depth and space to a room by reflecting the walls opposite of the mantel.
Redecorating a mantel is a quick, easy way to give a room a new look. Think of it as a blank canvas begging for paint. To fashion a striking arrangement, you can use a number of unique accessories. As you choose items, remember that big and bold is best! Small, timid items get lost on a mantel, so use pieces such as large pictures, long, delicate sticks, oversized candles, giant flowers or bouquets. If you don't have a mantel, hang a shelf; place a fireplace screen below and pretend. Here are some tips for creating magnificent mantels:

  • Collect sticks from your yard, three to four feet in length. Strip them of all small branches and leaves and place them in a tall, narrow vase. They create a perfect background for fresh flowers and ivy, or use them au naturel to add drama.
  • Stone garden finials, urns and iron gates add texture and interest when placed on a mantel. Don't change or clean the original finishes on an antique piece. Moss , rust, tarnish, etc., create a patina that adds to the piece's value.
  • Blend antique and contemporary accessories to develop mantel groupings. Choose items with similar finishes or colors to tie them together.
  • To create a formal, symmetrical display on your mantel, place a candlestick at each end and a floral arrangement (two to three times taller than the candles) in the center.
  • Always use odd numbers of accessories together -- it creates a more interesting arrangement.
  • Leave some empty space between accessory groupings on the mantel or the overall design will appear cluttered.
  • Collect photographs of different mantel arrangements from decorating and design magazines. Start a notebook and try a new design each month.
