Matt Fox consulted an expert for tips when choosing a gas log insert:
- Decide the purpose of the insert. Will it heat a room or just provide ambiance?
- Vented gas logs require a functioning wood burning fireplace with a fully open chimney when in use. They are less expensive than ventless models.
- Ventless inserts can be put in an existing gas fireplace with the damper closed. This conserves heat and is more efficient than if the damper is open.
- A direct vent fireplace draws air from the outside, burns it, and then exhausts it back out so there are no fumes.
- The installation of an insert is not a do-it-yourself project so count on the experts.
