Melanie Royals demonstrates how to create the illusion of architectural moldings
(see photo at right) with simple stencil and shading techniques
. Materials:
plastic grid ruler
dark gray watercolor pencil
painters tape
stencils
stencil brushes
oil-based paint creams (DecoArt Easy Blend Paint in charcoal gray and ebony were used on the show.)
paper tape
Steps:
- Use a grid ruler and a watercolor pencil to grid out the outer edges of molding and establish lines for shading (figure A). In the case of panels, use painters tape to establish and define "mitered" corners.
- Center the molding stencil and shade the design first with charcoal gray (figure B). Add further definition with ebony on those areas that fall away from a predetermined light source.
- Use paper tape or the outer edge of the stencil to shade a soft surface or "form" a shadow with charcoal gray.
- Use a combination of both charcoal gray and ebony to cast a shadow along the edges of the molding and at indentations (figure C).
