Muralists

Modern Masters : Episode MAS-413 -- More Projects »
Husband and wife Janet and Alan Shepard approach their joint projects from different angles, but the result is always composed. Alan sketches the outlines for the complex murals and tromp l'oeil treatments that decorate their clients walls, while Janet steps in and transforms the sketch into a literal wall of color.

Their respective specialties don't keep them from dabbling in the other's work, though. Sometimes they work on the same scene at the same time, improving on the other's work. This might drive some couples crazy, but for Janet and Alan, it's just something to which they are drawn.

History Nuggets

  • Murals are perhaps one of the oldest forms of interior design. Evidence of murals have been found in caves dating back as far as 15,000 to 10,000 B.C.

  • A mural is more than just a large painting set into a wall or ceiling. It must be designed for a specific area or room. The use of color, design, and theme can radically alter the feel of a room.
