Materials:joint compound
blue painter's tape
tarps
broad knife
notched tile trowel
latex primer
latex satin paint by Martha Stewart (walls: Goose Down DISCONTINUED; ceiling: Light Cocoa) K Mart
paintbrushes
3/8-inch roller
Steps:
1. Tape-off trim and baseboards and don't forget to throw a tarp on the floor as this can be messy. If starting with bare drywall, make sure to prime all the walls. If the wall is already painted, go directly to the first step, which is to apply the joint compound.
2. Starting at the top of one wall, use a broad knife to apply the compound, filling in about three widths of the knife with 1/8-inch-thick compound. Don't worry about how it looks and it doesn't have to be even, just not too thick. Pull a notched tile trowel horizontally through the joint compound, working from one corner to the other. Don't worry about being perfectly straight and if you lift the trowel, just pick up where you left off. The effect is more interesting when it's random. Stopping and starting is a good thing, but just make sure that you keep moving fast.
3. Once one wall has been completed with the compound and texturizing, move on to the other walls until the room is complete. Allow the compound to dry overnight and coat the walls with a latex primer.
4. Paint the walls in the color of your choice and let dry.
