Steps:

  1. Choose a recurring pattern in your drape or other decoration, and trace onto a stenciling material. Cut out the pattern (figure A).

  • Create a reverse stencil on a sheet of foam by tracing pattern (figure B) and cutting with a craft knife (figure C).

  • Place a sheet of mulberry paper over the stencil.

  • Spray mulberry paper with liberal amount of water to create a mold, and use a straight pin to poke holes throughout the pattern. Use a brush to press paper into the stencil to create the depth for the mold (figure D).

  • Fill mold with artist’s cement using an offset knife.

  • Let mold dry and cut excess from applique.

  • Attach applique to wall with wallpaper paste, repeating the whole process if applying more appliques.

  • Embellish the applique by brushing with a bronze colored paint (figure E) that will be muted by the overall coating in step 9.

  • Combine one 32 oz. jar of gloss adhesive with one .75 oz. jar each of "pearl white", "interference gold", and "macro white" paints and apply with sponge to cover entire surface (figure F). This amount of paint will cover the walls of a 32 x 17 foot room with cathedral ceilings.
