Have the look of stone without the extra weight by glazing over joint compound to make an accent table.
Materials:

pre-cut tabletop round
wrought iron table legs
primer
artist's acrylic paints (Raw Umber, Yellow Ocher)
3" foam brushes
joint compound
plaster spatulas or trowel
paint buckets
cotton cloths
sea sponge
fine-grade sandpaper
water-based glazing liquid
matte varnish

Steps:

  1. Sand pre-cut round slightly and use a damp cloth to wipe it off. Apply a coat of primer and let dry a few hours.
  2. Color joint compound by mixing two to three tablespoons Raw Umber plus one to two tablespoons Yellow Ocher to two cups plaster. Mix well. The color will dry lighter so adjust as desired before starting on tabletop.
  3. Use a spatula or trowel to spread a thin coat of plaster evenly over top. When completely covered, pull spatula gently over surface to make it look like stone.
  4. Create more texture by patting a damp sea sponge gently over some of the wet plaster, rinsing the sponge often as you work. Let dry for 24 hours, and then lightly sand surface. Wipe dust off.
  5. For umber glaze, mix one-cup glaze medium plus one to two tablespoons Raw Umber . For ochre glaze, mix one-cup glaze medium plus one to two tablespoons Yellow Ochre.
  6. Use foam brushes to apply a coat of ochre glaze to tabletop surface. Then apply a coat of umber glaze, working the two colors together with a cloth. Work until satisfied with the color and let dry completely.
  7. Coat with three to four layers of varnish to protect surface.
