Try guest MaryJo McGraw's Collage Veneers technique for transforming family photographs into fun "tin type" images that can be used to embellish greeting cards and more.

Materials:

photocopies of black and white vintage family photos - use a toner-based color copier
clear cold laminating sheets from JudiKins- #AP518
paper towels
scissors or craft knife
bowl of water
Krylon metallic paint pens
double-sided tape
assorted sizes of blank note cards - #AP613 (black square), #AP703 (white tall)
permanent/solvent ink and cleaner - optional
rubber stamps Artist Signature - #2333J - optional

Steps:

  1. Apply a photocopy to the sticky side of a piece of clear cold laminate.
  2. Rub the back side of the copy making sure it has adhered well to the laminate. Trim any excess laminate away.
  3. Immerse the entire laminated photocopy into water for one minute. Place the piece on paper towels, shiny side down, and rub the photocopy paper off the laminate with wet fingers. The image should still show on the laminate. If you notice a felt-like residue on the piece as it dries, dip the piece in water again and rub with fingers again to remove remaining paper.
  4. Blot the veneer with paper towels to dry it. Using a metallic paint pen, apply paint to the sticky side of the veneer. Trim the veneer again if necessary. If desired, use the same pens, apply paint directly to the edge of the veneers to give the plastic a finished look.
  5. Mount the laminate image, painted side down onto cardstock, greeting cards, etc and embellish as desired.
Tip: Use only your fingers when rubbing the paper off the laminate. Using scrubbing implements will scratch the surface of the image on the laminate.
