This wooden TV tray table, a garage sale find, is reworked with a faux marble finish. It fits perfectly in small spaces.
Steps:
- Sand the wood table top and remove dust.
- Mark a border with 1/4-inch masking tape, 1-1/2 inch from the edge of the tray (figure A). Tip: score the edge of the tape to prevent paint from bleeding under it.
- Apply one to two coats of a flat-finish base color (Wedgwood blue) with a sponge brush. If using an oil-base paint, be sure it is the non-yellowing kind.
- Daub four different colors of paint onto a paper plate: medium blue, dark blue , white and ecru (figure B). Try not to use equal amounts of all four colors--for example, about 70 percent light colors to 30 percent dark.
- Sponge color on, being careful not to overblend.
- When dry, dip a feather first in one of the four colors, then in a glass of water. Next, "nervously" drag the feather across the surface to create wide veins and tiny cracks (figure C). Work on a diagonal, and be careful not to make an X,Y, or Z with lines. Use a light hand.
- Remove the masking tape to reveal a natural wood border.
