Blue and white patterns

1. Paint the surface of the window box with white gesso.

2. Mark off rectangles to simulate tile shapes and outline with blue to create "grout" channels to hold the white background paint (figure A). Work on one flat surface at a time then let it dry completely before turning to another. Let outlines dry completely.

3. Working again on one side at a time, fill each tile shape with white Decor-it paint, allowing the paint to flood thoroughly over surface of each tile (figure B).

4. While the white paint is still wet, drop droplets of blue paint in evenly-spaced patterns over surface of a tile (figure C), then use a stylus to lightly spread the dots into the wet paint, creating a series of hearts or leaf patterns (figure D).

5. To make flowers, create a blue circle around a large blue drop of paint. Use a stylus to draw from the outside of the circle toward the center of the tile, creating evenly-spaced petals.

6. To create a swirled border, make small droplets of paint near the outside edges of the tile. Using a back-and-forth motion, draw a stylus through the dots, connecting each dot (figure E).

Figure G

1. Study floral wallpapers, fabrics or china patterns for inspiration in creating designs. With a pencil, trace or draw the outlines of patterns onto a window box painted with white gesso (figure F).

2. Working on one side of the box at a time, trace around the outlines of the penciled lines with black Decor-it paint squeezed directly from the bottle through the applicator tip (figure G). Let dry.

3. Fill in the pattern outlines with solid colors of paint in bright colors appropriate to the patterns chosen (figure H). If desired, use swirl techniques to create inner patterns in the leaves, petals, etc. (figure I).

4. Make "bull's-eye dots" by making a dot of one color directly over a dot of another color while both are wet (figure J).
