Materials:
latex primer/bonding primer (depending on furniture surface)
AquaPearl latex paint (base color: #HC-105 - Rockport Gray; top color #1: #HC-167 - Amherst Gray; top color #2 : #1603 - Graphite)
Stay Clear Low Luster acrylic finish
small natural wool sponge (cut edges square)
small foam or plastic plate
180-grit sandpaper
1" blue masking tape
TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate)
Surface Preparation:
- If the surface is unpainted wood, apply two coats of primer. Allow it to dry two to four hours between coats. Lightly sand second coat and dust off. Apply base color and allow to dry for two to four hours.
- If the surface is already painted, clean surface with TSP. Apply two coats of bonding primer and let dry overnight between coats. Apply base color and allow to dry for two to four hours.
- For floors, ask a paint dealer for the correct bonding primer and apply according to instructions. Let dry overnight. Apply base color and allow to dry for two to four hours.
Steps:
- Mask-off a series of four-sided shapes. Work in 1/4 of the surface at any time. Pour a little of the three colors into the plate sections.
- Moisten the sponge and wring out excess water. Pick up some HC-105 on the sponge, and starting in one of the shapes, pull the sponge across the surface on the diagonal by rocking it from side to side to vary the streaking.
- Without cleaning the sponge, pick up some HC-167 and 1603 and repeat Step 2, smooshing the new colors into the first (figure A). Clean sponge and let paint dry overnight.
- Pull tape and mask the adjacent shapes. Leave 1/8-inch spacing between shapes for a grout line. Repeat Steps 2 and 3.
- Add grout lines in desired color with a liner brush or mask-off the lines once squares are dry for a guide.
- Once all shapes are painted, apply two coats of clear finish for furniture and three coats for floors.
