Materials:

5/8" or 3/4" mdf (medium density fiberboard) to cover floor
gray latex paint
saw
construction adhesive
grinder or sander
polyurethane
craft sticks
grout
stamp or stencil
black spray paint

Tips:

  • Cut the mdf into any size or shape to fit the floor. These instructions feature 15-inch squares.
  • Applying mdf over vinyl or other flooring is not recommended.

Steps:

  1. Cut the mdf using a circular or table saw. Since this product comes in slightly larger than 4' x 8' sheets, one sheet yields about 18 squares.
  2. Use a grinder or sander to round and rough up the edges for a faux stone look.
  3. Mix gray paint with an equal amount of water for a wash. Use a rag or sponge to apply this using a hit and miss pounce method. Try to achieve the look of irregular stone. Apply as much or as little as desired and allow to dry.
  4. Spritz the squares with black spray paint. Use a light touch to avoid big splotches--just add some light shading (figure A).
  5. Give each square two coats of polyurethane, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second.
  6. Make sure the sub floor is in good condition. Use construction adhesive to attach each stone to the floor in a desired pattern. Use craft sticks to ensure even spacing between each.
  7. Once the adhesive is set, apply grout to the seams following the manufacturer's instructions (figure B).
  8. Apply a stencil or stamped decoration (optional).
  9. Apply at least two more coats of polyurethane, allowing adequate drying time between coats before using the floor.
